Sessions - Systems Management and Security

IBM i in the Clouds
Presenter: Rob Bestgen

Cloud computing is a hot topic nowadays. Many people are asking what does it mean for IBM i to be in the clouds and what are IBM’s plans for IBM i in the clouds. This session will start with an overview of clouds and then move to the technical underpinnings of a virtualized cloud infrastructure, the self service and automation of a cloud infrastructure, and the roadmap to get there,  all from an IBM i perspective.

IBM Systems Director in the IBM i Environment
Presenter: Rob Bestgen

Systems Director has becomes IBM’s systems management product of choice in recent years. Its ability to managePresenter: Don Denoncourt multiple, disparate resources across an entire datacenter brings a powerful capability to IBM i Power Systems customers. This session will provide an overview of Systems Director, including how it can help you manage your IBM i systems as well as other systems in your environment.

Manage IBM i from Your Browser Using the Built-in Director Navigator
Presenter: Rob Bestgen

Introduced in V6R1, Director Navigator is as close to you as your nearest web browser. Built into the IBM i operating system, it provides hundreds of system management tasks to help you manage your system. Its capabilities are further expanded with plug-ins that get installed automatically when you add products such as BRMS, Omnifind, Advanced Job Scheduler or PowerHA.

This session explores the many aspects of Director Navigator and how you can leverage it in your environment.

Cloud Computing – the Amazon Example
Presenter: Don Denoncourt

This presentation will introduce you to cloud computing with an emphasis on Amazon's cloud offerings.
Don will cover Amazon's direct competitors, then detail the services that Amazon provides.
You will discover how easy it is to create a web server, create low-cost backup, and use a cloud-based database. It will describe where you might begin using the cloud and offer some getting started advice.

High Availability and Disaster Recovery Options
Presenter: Steve Fier

“High Availability” refers to techniques that ensure your system remains available to your end-users, while “Disaster Recovery” is what you do in the event of an unplanned outage.  Topics to be discussed include disk protection, data backup, software replication, PowerHA, and planning and testing your HA and DR.

IBM Announcements
Presenter: Steve Fier

Steve will review the latest IBM Power Systems and IBM i announcements, and provide an update of what was announced in 2011 and how our customers are using these new technologies.

POWER versus X86
Presenter: Steve Fier

The POWER processor is at the heart of IBM’s midrange serves running IBM i, AIX and Linux, while “X86” refers to the Intel processor inside many servers running Windows and Linux.  This presentation will remind you of the many benefits of IBM’s Power Systems: performance, scalability, reliability, availability, serviceability, and much more.

Storage Options: Internal vs External Disk
Presenter: Steve Fier

Power Systems running IBM i have always supported high-performance internal disk drives, but there are good reasons to explore external disk storage connected via fiber-channel adapters too.  These reasons include additional availability functions like FlashCopy and enhanced PowerHA capabilities and sharing with other server architectures.  Steve will provide an overview of advantages and considerations for Internal vs External disk storage options.

Building Virtual i Partitions Hosted by IBM i
Presenter: Pete Massiello

New starting with IBM i 6.1 is the capability for one IBM i Logical Partition (LPAR) to provide virtual disk storage for another IBM i partition.  IBM i has provided "hosted disk" for Windows servers and AIX or Linux partitions for several years, but the ability to host another IBM i LPAR is new.  Come see how you can create a partition without any hardware required.  Pete will go through the step by step process of what is required to create these virtual partitions.  You can create a 7.1 partition for testing while continuing to run 6.1.

Get Started with the New Systems Director Navigator Console
Presenter: Pete Massiello

Released in IBM i 6.1, the Systems Director Navigator Console is a powerful new tool to better manage your IBM i environment. Get expert advice for installation and set up to make sure you get this powerful tool up and running at peak efficiency.

Step through the functionality of this product and learn how to leverage the Performance Data Investigator to turn the collection services data into graphs you can use to identify performance issues. Find out how to create monitors to manage your environment and various workloads as well as how to set up alarms to notify you when certain events threaten your environment. See how this tool can help you select and install logical files on your system to improve performance. Learn about the enhancements to this valuable tool in the latest release of IBM i 7.1.

Understanding HMC, FSP, i and Firmware
Presenter: Pete Massiello

It's no longer just an AS/400. If you are using partitions or thinking about partitioning your System i, there are a lot of new concepts to understand. In this presentation, we will dissect what all the pieces are, how they connect to each other, and what you need to do to set them up. Come learn about components such as Hardware Management Console, the Flexible Service Processor, Advanced Systems Management Interface, the i5, firmware, and the role of SLIC in all this. You need to understand how everything fits together in order to manage them.

Learning Objectives:
   1. Understand the differences between the FSP, the HMC, and IBM i OS
   2. An understanding of the relationships between each.
   3. How to use the HMC.

What You Need to Know For a Successful IBM i Upgrade
Presenter: Pete Massiello

When you upgrade IBM i, there is more work involved in the planning of the upgrade than in the actual upgrade itself.  Once you have done the planning, the actual upgrade is simple. We will cover planning tips, pre-requisites, the upgrade itself, and then post installation requirements. Your upgrade isn't complete until this last step is done. While this presentation will focus on upgrading to V6R1 & V7R1, if you are upgrading to an earlier release, you will still learn a lot.

By the end of this presentation, attendees will understand:
   1. What steps are required for an upgrade.
   2. What to check for the upgrade.
   3. What needs to be done afterwards to ensure success.

A Primer on IBM i User Profiles and How to Deploy Them Properly

You'll also learn about what system auditing does NOT capture, and how to prevent it from causing you to fail an audit.

Seven Habits of Highly Secure Organizations
Presenter: Robin Tatam

Everyone knows that security is important, but getting started on the road to compliance can be confusing and intimidating. Understanding common vulnerabilities helps you focus your attention and resources on the areas that need the most help.

We all want "best-practice" security, but what are top organizations doing to achieve and maintain it? Attend this session to learn the details about how to develop the seven habits that are part of daily life for secure organizations. You'll learn how to:

• Break the Ostrich Syndrome
• Develop a Security Policy
• Assess Current Standing
• Perform Security Event Logging and Review
• Use "Best of Breed" Technologies
• Monitor for Ongoing Compliance
• Plan For The Future

This session examines what each of these habits means to the IBM i, and helps you make sure that you don't become the next security statistic.

State of IBM i Security Study 2012
Presenter: Robin Tatam

PowerTech publishes a popular study of the configuration of IBM System i servers each year, called The State of IBM i Security. Now in its ninth year, we continue to see many of the same vulnerabilities reported to us through an anonymous auditing process.

The report includes a review of six main audit categories:

• Network access
• System values
• User settings
• Administrative rights
• Public authority to data
• Event auditing.

Attend this informative session for insight into the 2012 edition of the study and to learn what steps your own organization should take to address the same commonly overlooked and dangerous security exposures.
